Important Update: New Mulch Rules Under the New Jersey Fire Code

If you own or manage rental property in New Jersey, there’s an important new fire safety regulation you need to know about. The New Jersey Uniform Fire Code has been updated to include a restriction on the use of combustible mulch near buildings.

Garden State Pavement Solutions is here to help you implement an alternative to mulch to comply with the new code. Contact us here or call 848-356-4899 to learn more.

Effective April 15, 2025, you must maintain a minimum 18-inch clearance between any wood-based mulch and combustible building components such as decks, porches, balconies, or designated smoking areas.

This change is aimed at reducing fire risk near buildings like apartments, condominiums, and other multifamily dwellings.

  • View the Statewide Fire Safety Bulletin Summary here.

Here’s the key info:

  • The code applies to all rental properties, except most residential homes
  • You can no longer use wood-bases or other combustible mulch with 18 inches of specified areas.
  • Exceptions include live plants, concrete and brick buildings, and fire-resistant mulch.
  • Updates to your property must be made by April 15, 2026.
  • River stone eliminates this risk entirely.

RIVER STONE PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

Riverstone Installation | March 2025

Garden State Pavement Solutions completed a large-scale Riverstone installation project at Roseland, NJ, in March 2025. The scope included approximately 11,960 square feet of excavation, off-site soil recycling, and grading alongside building perimeters.

After excavation to a depth of 4 inches below grade, our team installed Geo Tech fabric and 4 inches of 1–5″ Delaware River Stone. To ensure clean, durable edging, nearly 6,000 linear feet of black aluminum trim was placed, carefully bent at corners for a smooth, rounded finish.

Despite the size and complexity, the project was completed efficiently in just five days, highlighting our team’s coordination, precision, and commitment to quality.

Riverstone Installation | April 2025

In April 2025, Garden State Pavement Solutions successfully completed a comprehensive Riverstone installation project at Florham Park, NJ. The five-day project involved the excavation and grading of approximately 19,100 square feet of soil along building perimeters, with all excavated material responsibly recycled offsite.

Following excavation to 4 inches below grade, our team installed Geo Tech fabric and topped the area with 4 inches of 1–5″ Delaware River Stone. To frame the layout, over 9,500 linear feet of black aluminum trim was installed, with all corners carefully rounded for a clean, finished appearance.

This large-scale installation demonstrates our continued commitment to precision, aesthetics, and environmentally responsible practices.
